How the Check Stitch compares to Box Stitch and 2x2 Rib Stitch...

These three knitting stitch patterns are based on alternating between pairs of knit and purl stitches across each row but as you can see from the images below, making a slight change to the stitch you commence the row with completely changes the look of the knitted fabric.

2x2 rib is a two row repeat which creates a column of 2 knit stitches with purl stitches in between.  The resulting fabric is stretchy and the knit stitch columns are the prominant feature of the stitch pattern.

Check Stitch is an 8 row repeat using the same stitch pattern for the 1st, 3rd, 6th and 8th rows, with the alternate stitch pattern (knit stitch that were purl stitches in the previous row) on the 2nd, 4th, 5th and 7th rows.

Box Stitch is a 4 row pattern repeat which also starts with the same 2 rows but in this stitch pattern the swith (with alternate stitch patterns for the 'stitch columns) occuring in the 2nd set of two rows.

Again, just a minor change to the order in which you alternate between knit and purl stitches but a huge difference in the look of the knitted fabric..
