Dividing one piece of knitting into 3 pieces for armholes

Using Mondial Express yarn to make their long sleeveless vest pattern, it calls for single piece to measure 59 cm, then divide the sts.

In three and work first the back (work 18 central sts.).

My question is how to do that when the yarn is attached to to the left front piece (11 sts.).

Must I detach the yarn and attach it to the central piece?

Thank you so much.

YOUR ANSWER

Yes you do, but personally I wouldn't detach the yarn.

I would join a new ball of yarn to the centre stitches and knit with the back with that. Or I would knit the front before doing the instructions for the back and then detaching the yarn.

If you detach the yarn you will only have to rejoin it when you get to the instructions for that front.

It is up to you, but I would prefer not to have an extra break in the yarn that will need to be woven in later.
